Stockholm Bypass

SE

About

This new bypass connects the southern and northern parts of the surrounding municipalities in Stockholm. The Siemens Mobility Tunnel Center of Mobility provides communication and monitoring technology. Infranea offers support through BIM and parametric design.

Challenge

The southern tunnel in the bypass will be one of the largest tunnels in the world. The requirements for output and preliminary tests are very high in such a large-scale project. So a smart and efficient approach is crucial.

Solution

In cooperation with Siemens, 3D designs are incorporated into the Siemens digital workflow and tooling, through involvement from the tender stage onwards. An open culture and periodic consultation puts the interests of Siemens Mobility first.

We ensure successful collaboration with our project colleagues in Sweden, among others, throughout the design and execution phases of this challenging international project. With that, we strive for the smartest and most efficient approach, within the frameworks involved in such a large-scale infrastructure project.

In 2018, the Swedish transport authority granted Siemens Mobility a contract for 800 million SEK (75 million euro) for the delivery of communications, control and monitoring technologies for E4 Stockholm Bypass. This new bypass connects the southern and northern parts of the surrounding municipalities in Stockholm in order to alleviate pressure on the main arterial roads, thereby significantly reducing traveller delays. The southern tunnel will be one of the largest road tunnels in the world.

Infranea supports the Dutch Tunnel Center of Competence by Siemens Mobility in the area of BIM and 3D parametric design. “We ensure successful collaboration with our project colleagues in Sweden, among others, throughout the design and execution phases of this challenging international project. With that, we strive for the smartest and most efficient approach, within the frameworks involved in such a large-scale infrastructure project”, Jeroen Groenewegen, BIM Manager at Infranea Holland BV explains.

The Siemens contract is one of five contracts for mechanical and electrical systems required for the tunnels and adjacent roads. It covers the extensive control and monitoring system for the facility that manages and monitors the safety functions in the tunnels. In addition, Siemens Mobility will be supplying a communications platform, camera security, a radio and mobile telephone network, and fire and incident detection systems.

Construction of the tunnels began in 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2030. Installation and testing of the systems supplied by Siemens Mobility will commence in 2023. Siemens Mobility will create an extensive design and perform factory tests prior to installation.

Our approach

The scale of the project justifies an investment in parametric design and automation. Infranea has been involved in the project since the tender phase. A plan was drafted in collaboration with Siemens to ensure that the 3D design can be aligned with the digital engineering workflow and tooling by Siemens. This plan incorporates Trafikverket’s output requirements. Project costs are reduced and the delivery speed increased by investing up front.

What’s great about this, is that we get it all done TOGETHER. Through periodic deliberation with the involved modellers and engineers, periodic management meetings, where decisions with regards to digitisation are weighed and incorporated transparently, and an open culture where the importance of Siemens Mobility comes first, both short and long term.
