Habitat for humanity

Habitat for Humanity helps families and communities in disaster-prone areas to build resilience necessary to cope with the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters. The overall goal is to help low-income families help themselves. Habitat for Humanity’s areas of expertise include: new homes or reconstructions, water and sanitation, education and training, disaster response, housing micro-finance, renewable energy, sustainable development. Every year, some of our employees will be travelling to a project and put their expertise at service. VK is so happy to be contributing to this organisation!

Leadership & Corporate Governance

Since 2017, the external private equity investor Down 2 Earth holds a majority stake at VK. They support our ambitions for international growth. On a daily basis, VK is led by the executive team which determines the direction in the long term. Route 25, VK’s strategic plan, is our guideline to choose work that aligns with our values, working with clients on ambitious projects that will set new standards. The executive committee works side by side with the members of the management team.

The Green Deal

To take up responsibility for the planet and to put people first, means sweeping your own doorstep as well. We analysed our CO2 footprint and calculated the CO2 equivalent of each employee on mobility, energy and waste. To measure satisfaction, we did an extensive survey.

Mobility

76 % of our CO2 emissions

Since the greatest environmental impact we generate, comes from our transportation, we took on a more sustainable mobility approach.

We’ve launched a Mobility app to encourage the use of more sustainable transportation means (public transport, bike, step...) when travelling to other departments or clients. 100% refunded by VK.

We’re working towards a Greener Fleet with additional investments in the hybrid car fleet and by offering a Mobility package in which employees exchange their car for other more sustainable options.

Energy & Water

21 % of our CO2 emissions

The energy and water consumption of the office buildings require our attention. The greatest environmental impact we generate, comes from our gas consumption. The use of tap water has a very low impact. As most of the VK offices are not our own property, we have less impact on this domain. Many of the measures to reduce energy and water use are related to the decisions of our landlord.

However, we do what we can by switching to a green energy supplier, implementing energy and water saving measures and by auditing energy and water for optimisation

Procurement & Waste

3 % of our CO2 emissions

Our material and waste impact is minimal. The greatest environmental impact we generate, comes from our bottled water and soft drinks. That’s why we’ve been investing to reduce our procurement and waste impact since 2018 by removing soft drinks and replacing bottled water by tap water.

In addition, we procure ‘Common Grounds’ coffee beans from JDE (sustainability of land, equality of people, prosperity of farmers) and sustainable furniture (eco labelled, grouped orders) and encourage reuse of office supplies.

These measurements have resulted in an 82% drop in carbon emissions for this domain since 2018.

Happiness at work

Employee satisfaction is measured by calculating the turnover rate, Bradford Factor and Net Promotor Score.

To improve the wellbeing of our employees, we introduced a hybrid working policy, depending on the type of work that needs to be done (focus vs meeting, brainstorm). You can work anywhere you want (also abroad), there’s fruit at work and we have a Development of Talent and leadership program.

We organise activities like Radio OneVK, VK Quiz, boardgame nights and health challenges like walking, mindful eating, enough water…
