Bicycle path Langerbruggestreet

BE

About

The bicycle path in the Langerbruggestraat completes the F402 bicycle highway in the Ghent seaport. The bicycle path is 850 metres long and provides adequate space for the daily bicycle trips to and from work and school.

Challenge

Constructing a safe bicycle path that is part of the F402 bicycle highway and offers a new route for the bicycle commuter.

Solution

The comfortable two-way bicycle path has a width of three metres and lies on top of a recently built heating network. The plots in the industrial zone protect cyclists from freight traffic over a distance of 850 metres. Several local intersections draw cyclists' attention to their crossing.

On a daily basis numerous bicycle trips for work and school are on the counter, which can now take place in a much more safe environment.

VK realised for the province of East Flanders and North Sea Port a missing link in the bicycle highway F402, located at the Langerbruggestraat. The F402 is a bicycle axis connecting the east and west sides of the Sea Canal Ghent-Terneuzen. On a daily basis numerous bicycle trips for work and school are on the counter.

A separate two-way cycle path has been constructed up to the Langerbrugge ferry, in asphalt over 850 metres. The two-way bike path has been constructed above the recently realised heat network at a width of three metres. The location between the canal and the industrial plots protects the cyclist against the freight traffic. Where the bike path crosses the local roads, the cyclist is given no right of way and is alerted to the crossing. Bicycle supports increase waiting comfort.

The bicycle infrastructure along the Langerbruggestraat represents an investment of 856,000 euros for the Province. The Flemish government subsidizes 50% through the Fietsfonds (Bike Fund), while North Sea Port allocates the land.
