Habitat for humanity 2023 - Volunteering program in Cumpana, Romania

About

Within our partnership with Habitat for Humanity, this spring we offered 3 employees to travel to Cumpana, Romania and for one week, help to build homes for families in need of a decent, safe and healthy home.

VK architects+engineers strives to make a lasting and positive impact in everything we do. Not only do we have sustainable ambitions for the planet, we are also committed to everyone who calls it home. From a corporate social responsibility perspective, VK supports the organisation Habitat for Humanity. This non-profit organisation is committed to helping families and communities get decent and affordable housing. Every year, VK chooses a project that we support financially and a project which some of our employees will help build.

This year, Bram Derudder, Aimee Higgs, and Lieve Van der Spiegel worked as volunteers on new housing in Cumpana, Romania. They helped the families build comfortable new homes. Aimee thinks back on the intense week with great satisfaction. “Working with the families who will live in the houses, hearing their stories, and how much these houses mean to them was a moving reminder of why I wanted to be an architect in the first place.”

A big round of applause for Bram, Aimee, and Lieve for their dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm. Three more volunteers will leave for Tutora, Romania, in the autumn to help build community, foster opportunities, and contribute to equality for all.
