Logistics center Post Group

About

The logistics centre of the Post Group Luxembourg's technology service includes an administrative building, a logistics hall, covered parking, and several storage facilities.

Challenge

The specific shape of the administrative building that is fully glazed required some creativity in tackling heat loads.

Solution

A combination of indoor and outdoor shade controlled by a weather station provides a pleasant indoor climate. The external solar shades are also a striking architectural element. Moreover, concrete core activation and recovered heat from the server rooms reduce power consumption.

Additional heating and cooling is provided by floor fan coil units installed in the false floor along the entire façade. This unique element was made specifically for the project to fit the curve of the façade.

The Logistics Centre for Post Group Luxembourg’s Technology Service activities, located in Roost, comprises an administrative building, a logistics hall, a covered car park and various different storage areas.

In addition to its excellent thermal envelope (class AAA), this building with its unique architecture is distinguished by the various complementary techniques used to limit heat and cold consumption to a minimum.

The heat is produced by the city heating network, while the cold is produced via refrigeration machines operating in cascade to optimise partial operations. A horizontal flow cooling tower on the roof completes the system and was tailor-made to fit in harmoniously with the architecture.

The administration building is equipped with custom-made interior blinds (for winter light) and vertical exterior blinds that are managed directly by the weather station. Once again, the technology contributes to the aesthetics of the building. The fire-fighting tank for the fire brigade was also designed with energy optimisation in mind. 300m³ is used to store the chilled water produced by the cooling machines, which limits the operation of the machines to strategic times of the year.

In order to make the most of every single calorie, various different devices have been put in place to distribute heat and cold, even at low temperatures. A hydraulic network, poured into the concrete during the structural work phase, activates the concrete and maintains the building at comfortable temperatures with very low energy consumption: optimised operation at 31/28°C at very low temperatures for heating and 17/21°C for cooling. The heat from the computer server rooms is recovered and re-injected into the active slab system.

Additional heating and cooling is provided by floor fan coil units installed in the false floor along the entire façade. This unique element was made specifically for the project to fit the curve of the façade. The ventilation rate is also ensured by these devices and is automatically managed depending on how many people are in each zone, thanks to CO2 sensors. An adiabatic cooling device allows the limiting, once again, of the consumption of chilled water for the ventilation system.

Particular attention has also been paid to water consumption. Rainwater is collected from 3,500 m² of roofing to provide all the water needed for the toilets, and especially for vehicle washing, which uses up a lot of water.

A surveillance and access monitoring system has been installed throughout the site. A large part of the facilities is backed up by generators and a no-break system. The control and dimming of the lights has been carefully studied in order to meet the different needs of the internal services: administration, hall, night intervention, etc.

The entire site is supervised by a GTC-web, allowing the client to see the facilities in real time, thereby enabling facility management.
