Smart hospital, digital hospital and digital transformation

About

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary scientific approach that aims to formalise and understand the design and validation of complex systems. In this context, a system refers to a set of human or material elements that are interdependent and interoperate within boundaries that may or may not be open to the environment, which in this case is a hospital.

While BIM is indispensable, even unavoidable, we need to do more. Through digitisation, we can create and manage a database in bidirectional synchronisation with Revit.

System engineering as an innovative tool for hospital design - case studies of 2 university hospitals in Belgium

We use this approach to digitise the hospital design process, in particular for the “HospitaCité” project of the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (CuSL), which involves the reconstruction and renovation of 139,000m², and the “U Project” for the Ghent University Hospital (UZG), for the realisation of their 170,000m² master plan.

Our mission involves gathering information on operating modes, defining needs, and translating them into plans, measurements, and specifications. This represents an astronomical amount of data. While BIM is indispensable, even unavoidable, we need to do more.

Through digitisation, we can create and manage a database in bidirectional synchronisation with Revit. This database is directly linked to the articles in our specifications and provides information on each room. The dRofus tool, linked to the BIM model (Revit), is used from the programming phase to integrate a large amount of data, saving considerable work. Our goal is to allow our clients to interact directly with this database.

Another critical need is to determine the cost of the work at each design stage. Thanks to system engineering, we are developing a calculation method based on the ratios of types of premises extracted from this database. This will enable us to define an estimate linked to the model and its parameters as it is being built.

The next step is to design our projects with the parameters of these databases to better meet our clients' expectations.
